Privacy for families
Chess Quest is a chess learning site for children. A parent, guardian or teacher (18+) creates the account and adds a profile for each child. Children never create accounts, never enter an email or password, and cannot talk to other users.
What we collect
- Grown-up account: email, name, and either a password (stored as a one-way hash) or your Google account ID. Your Google profile picture if you sign in with Google.
- Child profile: a nickname, a cartoon avatar and an age range. No real name, birth date, photo, location or contact details.
- Learning progress: which lessons were finished, answers to checks and reviews, scores, hints used, and minutes played per day.
- Consent record: when you added each child profile, which version of this notice you agreed to, and how.
What we don't do
- No advertising and no ad tracking.
- No third-party analytics on child profiles.
- No chat, messages or public profiles. Children can't see or contact other children.
- We never sell or share your data.
Why we use it
Only to run the learning path: saving progress, unlocking lessons, scheduling reviews, and showing you progress in the parent area.
Your controls
- See each child's progress in the Parent area.
- Set a daily time limit and a parent PIN.
- Download all your family's data as a file at any time.
- Delete a child profile, or your whole account. Deletion is immediate and permanent. It removes the profile and all of its progress.
How long we keep it
Progress is kept while the account exists. Deleted profiles and accounts are removed from the live database immediately. Encrypted database backups are overwritten on a rolling 14-day cycle, so deleted data is gone from backups within 14 days.
Where it's stored
On our own server. The chess engine used for playing runs inside your browser, so your moves in those games are not sent to us unless a game is saved.
